Freedom Forum is a prominent non-governmental organization in Nepal dedicated to institutionalizing democracy, protecting and promoting human rights, press freedom, freedom of expression, right to information, promoting audit accountability, open and accountable budget, public finance reforms, citizen engagement in public finance management and citizen participation in audit. Established in February 2005, the organization emerged in response to the political turmoil following Former King Gyanendra’s coup dated February 1, 2005, which imposed severe restrictions on media and democratic rights. A group of media professionals, legal experts, and academics founded Freedom Forum to safeguard Nepal’s hard-earned democratic freedoms during this repressive period.

<strong>Executive Chief Dahal bags National Award on RTI</strong>

Freedom Forum's Executive Chief Mr Taranath Dahal has bagged the Sastikadevi Right to Information National Award in recognition to his significant role on the RTI sector. The award to be conferred by the Federation of Nepali journalists (FNJ) Morang Chapter carries a purse of Rs 51,000 along with a letter of felicitation. The FNJ Morang Chapter said Mr Dahal was awarded for his tremendous role for bringing the RTI Act, and establishing the National Information Commission in Nepal, and the untiring efforts for the implementation of the RTI with the creation of vibrant demand and supply sides. With this, his efforts concentrated on exposing huge corruption and irregularities in a bid to build the good governance regime across the country. The Award will be conferred on March 30 on the occasion of the FNJ Establishment Day amidst a programme in Biratnagar. Similarly, Executive Chief Dahal is being conferred on the Press Freedom Fighter Award for his role on promotion and protection of press freedom and journalists' safety. The Award to be given by the FNJ Panchthar Chapter carries a purse of Rs 22,222 along with a felicitation letter. The award is being given on coming Republic Day of Nepal- Jestha 15. Freedom Forum congratulates Mr Dahal on his achievement, and wishes his continued zeal for the protection and promotion of RTI and press freedom in the country.
