About Us

Freedom Forum is a prominent non-governmental organization in Nepal dedicated to institutionalizing democracy, protecting and promoting human rights, press freedom, freedom of expression, right to information, promoting audit accountability, open and accountable budget, public finance reforms, citizen engagement in public finance management and citizen participation in audit. Established in February 2005, the organization emerged in response to the political turmoil following Former King Gyanendra’s coup dated February 1, 2005, which imposed severe restrictions on media and democratic rights. A group of media professionals, legal experts, and academics founded Freedom Forum to safeguard Nepal’s hard-earned democratic freedoms during this repressive period.

Freedom Forum's Executive Chief honoured with "Freedom Fighter Award"

Freedom Forum congratulates it’s Executive Chief Taranath Dahal, for being honoured with this year's 'Freedom Fighter Award'. The award was presented to Dahal amidst a function organized by Panchthar Chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists at Fidim on July 12, 2018. The award carries a purse of Rs 22,222 along with a letter of appreciation. Federation of Nepali Journalists, Panchthar Chapter provides this award to a journalist every year in recognition of significant contribution to strengthen civic liberties through journalism. Mr. Dahal has been honoured with this award for his tremendous efforts on lobbying and advocacy for Freedom of Expression, Press freedom and Right to Information to build good governance regime across the country. Likewise, 'The Late Haricharan Bhadramaya Environment Journalism Award' has been presented to journalist Radha Gautam hailing from Panchthar. The award bags a cash prize of Rs 5,555. On the occasion, Mr. Dahal stressed the need for Nepali media to be more credible, dignified and professional and urged the government to not bring any laws and Acts that curtain the space of freedom of expression and opinion. Also speaking on the occasion, FNJ Central Vice-Chairperson and FF's Executive Member Bipul Pokharel, Fidim Municipality Mayor Omhang Nembang and Panchthar Panchthar District Coordination Committee Chief Bishnu Prasad Sapkota underlined the need of people-friendly and professional journalism. The program was presided  by FNJ Panchthar District Chair Labdev Dhungana.
