Two media houses and a journalist's residence have been swept away by the flood that struck Nuwakot, Bagmati Province, on August 26.
Kiran Adhikari, Editor of Sundardevi Sandesh Weekly, a local publication in Nuwakot, informed Freedom Forum that his residence and the media office in Dhungebazaar, Nuwakot was swept away by the flood. Adhikari and his family members are safe and are currently staying at a relative’s home in Kathmandu. He estimated the loss worth Rs. 500,000–700,000, including the loss of media archives and data of 13 years.
Radio Chimteshwor, Jalapa, and Trishuli are currently operating at limited capacity due to power outages and internet disruptions, according to journalist Ram Hari Neupane.
The flood also damaged fibre-optic and other equipment of a community radio station Nuwakot FM, disrupting its operations, said Station Manager Shree Ram Adhikari. He estimated the damage worth around Rs. 300,000–400,000.
Meanwhile, Radio Langtang, based in Rasuwa has also stopped its operations due to a lack of power backup, said Station Manager Geeta Neupane. Rasuwa FM also located in Rasuwa district is partially operational due to lack of backup power and damaged telephone hybrid.
FF has serious concerns over the losses suffered by media outlets and journalists. We strongly urge the concerned authorities to support local media outlets in maintaining smooth operations through alternative arrangements and to ensure uninterrupted access to information during this crucial situation.
