About Us

Freedom Forum is a prominent non-governmental organization in Nepal dedicated to institutionalizing democracy, protecting and promoting human rights, press freedom, freedom of expression, right to information, promoting audit accountability, open and accountable budget, public finance reforms, citizen engagement in public finance management and citizen participation in audit. Established in February 2005, the organization emerged in response to the political turmoil following Former King Gyanendra’s coup dated February 1, 2005, which imposed severe restrictions on media and democratic rights. A group of media professionals, legal experts, and academics founded Freedom Forum to safeguard Nepal’s hard-earned democratic freedoms during this repressive period.

103. Universal Periodic Report on Freedom of Expression

Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a process that involves periodic review of the human rights records of the Member States by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) where Nepal is also a member state. On January 21, 2021, the thirty-seventh session of the Human Rights Council's UPR working group was held. During this program, the Nepal government presented its national report highlighting the status of human rights and implementation of recommendations from the previous review. To this, representatives from other member states provided recommendations to further protect and promote human rights in Nepal. In today's episode, we will be discussing the UPR report on freedom of expression (FoE) which was submitted by Freedom Forum to the Working Group on UPR. Under the FoE, the themes were FoE, access to information, and safety to journalists. Let's listen to the 103rd episode of the Freedom Chautary Podcast.
