The stage drama 'Lucifer Rising' was halted on May 24. Drama team announced indefinite halt of the show in Kathmandu. The drama was being performed at EK Theater Nepal in Kathmandu since May 15.
Theater member Saujan Senehang told Freedom Forum that the drama had two shows scheduled at 1:15 pm and 5:15 pm on Saturday. "Writer and director Sahalesh informed us that the play would not be staged from the day. He further informed us that he had been receiving numerous death threats through phone calls and messages over the play and asked us to halt the show,” shared Senehang.
According to media reports, other actors involved in the play have also been allegedly receiving death threats.
Senehang further cited director Sahalesh as saying that the threats appeared to be politically motivated. Publisher Majhuwa Bagar issued a notice stating that the show was forcefully halted due to increased pressure from unidentified political persons and groups.
FF tried to contact director Sahalesh but his mobile was found switched off.
Lucifer Rising, released on May 15 and scheduled to stage till June 3, is based on the Gen Z movement that took place in Nepal on September 8 and 9.
This incident is a severe restriction of artistic freedom and freedom of expression. Art is one of the important means of expressing emotions and bringing social issues to light. Hence, FF draws attention of the concerned authorities to address the issue and ensure a safe environment for exercise of artistic freedom.
